{Electronic Journals}

See here for visuals!

This is how the dreamwidth journals are explained.

The journals are the only form of truly complex technology within the city. It actually seems quite out of place, but most of the people of Paixao seem to possess one. They are sold all over stores and it is not uncommon to find misplaced ones lying in the streets. Just about anyone can obtain one, if they so choose.

The object is small and rectangular shaped, about 4" x 5" when closed, and is relatively light. Most of them are colored black, silver, blue, or other generic colors, but some people buy special covers for them and decorate them to customize them. It has a screen which flips up, revealing a small keyboard beneath; it contains letters, numbers, and an on and off button. If one has a special pen to go with the journal, it is also possible to use the screen as a tablet. There is a small groove in the keyboard to place the pen in for safe-keeping. It's sort of like a pocket PC.

The journal acts just as it is; a journal. But there is a very complex, wireless network (they are no longer limited to the inside of the city) that the journal is part of—anyone who possesses one can find the entries of another, and even comment if they wish. While it is possible, only those who are exceptionally smart or very curious seem to know how to make entries private or user-specific. It is possible for users to comment on journal entries, or disable them.

There is also a second "communal" journal—anyone can post in it, and anyone can reply to it; however it's not possible to disable commentary when posting there. More often than not, people use it to find things, advertise work, or announcing special events. Separate users are defined by a unique username.

It's also possible to hold private conversations outside of the journals. Essentially, these are AIM conversations. Rather than using comments, if two users are on the network at the same time, it is possible for them to converse in real time via a small window which pops up in the corner. No one can see what goes on in these separate windows, though it's questionable if others are able to tap in on them or not.

It is also possible to create a group chat between multiple people.

Another feature of the electronic journals is that they all feature a map—there are plots of every building, every street, and every home on it. Searching for a location, it can give directions on how to get there from the current standing point. Whatever is beyond the domes, however, is not charted at all.

Animals can use the journals very easily, too, if they have the mental capacity to do so. It has a "voice recognition" feature which allows talking animals (such as characters from movies like The Lion King) to speak to it and write in what they wish, and hold conversations on AIM that "speak back" to them with an electronic voice. Their journals also come with a carrying case that can be fastened around their neck like a collar.

Obviously, these features can also be used by those who can't read/see/etc.

The journals will show one single basic icon picture of your character (or none in the case of many Org characters who wish to remain anonymous). Only OOCly for our own amusement do all the expressions show. Pictures can be drawn using the pen and posted. Certain characters might have more access to the network to post photos etc. but this access depends on the character. The journals do not have video posting capability!

Here describes the camera function more in-depth.

Not possessing a journal is frowned upon. If it is mentioned that someone does not possess one, most of the time their friends will go out of their way to make sure they get one, giving them one as a gift or giving them the money to buy them. The people of Paixao are obsessed with them and feel life is not complete without this means of communication.
