{Frequently Asked Questions}
General
What sort of game is Paixao? While the game is often called journal based, that's not really accurate. Paixao is better described as hybrid between community and journal. Largely, Paixao's focus is on 3rd person roleplay in the main community. The message board serves as a place for more important announcements and posts, and the journals more a personal level. Our requirements for first person roleplay are low, and we only ask that players attempt to keep one character's journal friend list up-to-date, although if one wished to simply use the main community's friend list, that is an acceptable option!
How fast is the game? Paixao is a slightly slower paced game than many rps out there. It can range from slowish to moderate, depending on various factors. With a heavy basis in 3rd person rping, gameplay does not move always at a fast rate, however. If you prefer fast paced games, Paixao might not be for you. However the game is very manageable for anyone with a busy RL schedule or are involved in other faster games.
How can I contact other players? AIM, Plurk, PM, e-mail and skype are all largely used by most of Paixao. While Plurk has become one of the favourite mode of communication, you can still catch many players via AIM. We also tend to have fairly frequent Skype chats. You can find a player's contact info here. Is it necessary to use AIM/Plurk etc. ? No, not at all! We understand that some players prefer to keep most of their interactions to IC only and you are more than welcome to do so, but we do find that good OOC communication helps the RP experience.
Playing the Game
How does time work in Paixao? The game runs on one week in game is five weeks real time. Week changes are posted to the OOC Community.
Is posting your application in your profile a requirement? Yes, though you can also put a link in the profile to a post containing your application. Also, the only thing you need to post is the information about your character. OOC info and samples are not required. We ask players to do this as not everyone is familiar with your series and character, and could be curious to know about who they are playing with.
My character has zero art available for icons, can I use a PB? What about making my own art? If there's really no images out there for them, then yes, you are free to do so. And your own artwork is, of course, welcome.
If I'm currently in a log, can I still post in paixaomb or my own journal? Yes. You may do whatever you like in the first person aspects of the game, as long as it does NOT contradict what is going on in your third-person thread--that is, having them in two dramatically different places at one time, unless the logs/thread is before or after one or the other. Keep continuity in mind, basically.
If I'm stuck in a log in paixaorpg, can I move on? We allow players to be in more than one thread at a time, so this might not be an issue. As above, think of continuity. If you've been stuck for over a week in an important (something that may change your character's thoughts/actions depending how it goes) thread, we encourage you to try and contact the other participants of the thread to sort it out, whether it's to finish the thread, plan the rest out, or as a worse case scenario, summarize it and move on. If the thread, however, is something important you can't so easily predict the outcome to and you've been stuck over a week, we encourage you to try to contact any other players in the thread so you can summarize and move on.
How long does a log comment have to be? There are no requirements on the length of a comment! Some of us like to write a lot, but there are a lot of times that you just can't, or you don't need to write a lot! As long as you try to give something for the next person to be able to play off of, you're good!
Are we allowed to have multi-thread logs? Yes! Sometimes you'll see people make a "party-style" log, coined from party threads when there were many different things going on, so there were multiple thread-chains. These are welcome at any time, and anyone can post them! Just make a note of it in the initial thread.
What happens when I drop a character? When you drop a character, everyone that had interacted with them will still remember everything, and believe that the character has vanished. Sometimes they have, disappearing right around other characters. For those who have vanished, the journals appear as being "user not found".
Can I canon update my character? Yes, we do allow canon updates! If you wish to take the character from a later point in canon than they are currently, send us an email with the changes, so that we have it in our record. If you want to just add in newly learned information about the character's past to your profile, you are free to do so without having to send us an email.
The Setting
Are we allowed to have our characters go outside the domes? While the guards are still not eager to let anyone leave, if you can get past you are free to do so, especially as the game has expanded its original borders a considerable amount. The journals will work outside of the city and beyond.
The Journals
What are the journals? Similar in size to a DS, they're the main source of communication in Paixao. More information can be found here.
What can they do? They are very similar to a journal system, able to make text and voice posts, PIM aka PIMP (see below), have a map function, a draw function (like MsPaint) complete with a small pen and can take digital photos. They also have text to voice function for those who are unable to type.
What can't they do? Make breakfast. Do your laundry. Solve the answer to life. Run a decent business model. Rollback Release 88. While the journals do have cameras for taking pictures with, they are only digital photos. Video is NOT available.
What is "PIMP"? Paixao's journals have a instant messaging function, allowing players to RP using AIM, then posting the log to the main community. PIM or PIMP, as it has come to be known as, stands for Paixao Instant Messenger (Program). It is considered as first person activity and counts as that for activity checks.
Can a character see the different icons others use when they leave comments on the journals? No. The only thing you see is a single picture of them unless the post is anonymous or is an Organization member, as they use blank or symbols for their icon. (Only IC posts on paixaocrack are exempt from this.)
Applying
What is the character limit? You are only allowed to have ten characters at a time and you may have no more than three characters from one particular fandom. However, you are only allowed to app two members of Organization XIII and one of the Kingdom Hearts Disney Villains.
Are Original Characters (OCs) allowed? No, we don't currently allow OC's. (However, soon they will be!) The only OC characters currently in the game are citizens and lumens that are NPC'd.
Can I apply for a AU version of a character? You are allowed to apply for canon AU versions of characters, such as those from Kingdom Hearts and Tsubasa Chronicle. You cannot, however, app a younger version of a character that already exists in the game. The only exception to this rule is characters like the Doctor, from Doctor who, or Dax from Star Trek, as their other selves are very different from each other. If there is already one version of a character, you can still app its canon AU.
Are there any other restrictions on the kind of characters I can app? While there are very few characters we won't accept, there are some exceptions:
1. Characters from games after the timeline of Kingdom Hearts 2 - Paixao was created with Kingdom Hearts 2 in mind, thus any new canon may not fit into the setting. It is a bit of a case-by-case scenario regarding any new characters introduced, but, for example, we will not be accepting any characters from Kingdom Hearts Coded as all new characters from that game came into existence AFTER Kingdom Hearts 2.
2. Semi-related to the above, we will not be allowing the "Others" of the Organization XIII cast (Lea, Isa, Braig, Even...) with the exception of the characters with extenuating circumstances. Unfortunately, we need a full Organization more than we need these characters at the moment.
3. Characters that come from books that's author has said they do NOT allow fanfiction to be written from their stories. There really are some authors out there who do not want people writing stories based off their books and will go after those that do.
4. Characters that lack a firm sense of canon. Unless you can write a really convincing app, generally we will turn away characters that fall under this. One example would be Vocaloid.
5. Characters from fanbased or fanmade materials.
6. These specific characters are also not available for apping as they are currently being NPC'd: Xemnas.
Can I app a character from a game that hasn't been released in English yet? For more obscure games, our policy is that if you have played the game and, for the most part, understand it, you are welcome to app from it. However, in regards to more mainstream games, especially Kingdom Hearts games, we ask that people wait until the have been released in North America.
How long does it take for my application to be approved? It can take from a couple of days, up to a week. We generally approve applications once 3 of the current moderators have voted. If one or more of the moderators didn't OK it or asked for a revision, then it's likely that it'll take longer before you receive an email from us. It can also take longer if the mods aren't familiar with the series or if there's something unusual about your application that the mods need to deliberate over. If it's been over a week and you still haven't heard back from us, please get in touch with us.
How long should applications be? A good application should be well-rounded, and not leave us feeling like we've only been described half of a character. Don't just list out facts. We want to also be able to see the flow of your writing and good, solid paragraphs. In the samples, we want to be able to hear a voice in what is written and, in the case of a third-person sample, we'd also like to get some idea as to how the character thinks. Generally, if you do all these things, your application will be longer than 1-2 pages in Word. Anything less is most likely incomplete. Even a relatively minor character can often have a lot said about them. More guidelines for what we want to see in your application are available on the application page.
What do I do if there's not much information regarding my character's canon? You can either stick to what you know, or, take the available information and build upon on it. Generally, a lack of canon only gives problems in the Personality and History part of the application. With regards to the former, try and observe the character's behavior, speech, and other mannerisms in order to fill up that section. History-wise, it's up to the applicant. Again, you can just write what you know or attempt to add an original background to what's been revealed. If you do that, however, please make it well-written and believable. Your backgrounds should not contradict canon. Also, if you are apping a major character, please stick to what the canon has to say regarding them in your app. You are free to implement headcanon, but please speak with your cast mates about it first.
What sort of powers/abilities will be weakened once a character is in Paixao? Generally, we allow most powers to be left intact and un-weakened. Only extremely powerful, very unusual and/or potentially game breaking powers we ask to be weakened or nullified. If you aren't sure it would be allowed, there's a good chance it wouldn't be. That isn't always the case, however. Basically, contact the mods and we will look into it. However, any and all powers regarding traveling between time and dimensions will be nullified.
What happens if I apply for a character that someone else used to play in the game? That character comes to the game with no memory what-so-ever of previously being in the game. (Except in special circumstances where one player has an agreement with the previous player and mods to carry on playing the character from where the previous mun left off.)
What happens if I re-app a character that I previously dropped? You can either start from scratch or have them remember being in Paixao before. It is at the mun's discretion.
What if my character is very large? It does depend a bit how large we're talking here, but our main suggestion is to try to play them as they are and ICly find ways to solve the problem of being large. This is largely another case-by-case issue.
How do reserves work? A reserver is given a week from the date they commented to turn in an application. Once their reserve has expired they'll be given an opportunity to extend their reserve for another week. If they do not request an extension, the reserve is dropped.
Someone has the character I wanted to apply for reserved, can I challenge their application? A reserve guarantees that we'll look at their application before we consider another. While we don't accept app challenges, you are free to send in your application if you should wish, in case the other player does not get their application in before the end of their reserve/extension. If they fail to do so, we will then look at yours.
Activity
When does the Activity Check take place? Once a month, starting on the 8th and ending on the 15th.
What are the requirements? See the rules page for the full Activity Check rules!
What if my characters are active and I forget to comment to the check? Unfortunately, you'd be considered inactive and have to show double activity for the next check! Don't forget to check in!
What if only one of my characters are unable to meet the active requirements? That character will be considered inactive and thus we will expect to see double activity for them in the next Activity Check. Be sure to check in with the characters you have that CAN meet the requirements though!
Hiatuses
What's the maximum time I can take a hiatus? The maximum time is two months! And note that if you take a hiatus over a month long, you'll be expected to show double activity for the next Activity Check after you're back!
What if I come off hiatus during an Activity Check? You'll be considered as still being on hiatus for that check, thus do not have to check in. You will however have to check in next month!
If I put up a hiatus post on the OOC Community, am I considered to be on hiatus? No. You are required to comment on the Hiatus Post to be officially considered to be on hiatus by the Moderators. Failing to comment on the hiatus post, will result in you being considered not on hiatus in regards to the
